Abstract: My goal for this assignment is to define and differentiate criminal and non-criminal psychopathy, antisocial personality disorder, and general criminal behavior. I will also articulate the role of compulsive and addictive behavior in criminal and non-criminal psychopathy, discuss criminal profiling from other types of forensic evaluation, and analyze predatory behaviors based on the co-occurrence of crime scene behaviors. In closing I will develop a profile of a serial predator based on offender, victim, and crime scene characteristics. Psychopathy is currently understood as a cluster of behaviors and personality traits that are typically viewed in a negative light (Hare 1993). Psychopaths are described as callous†¦show more content†¦Similarly, Blair (2006) has acknowledged the possibility that there is a genetic factor that predisposes individuals with psychopathy to develop antisocial behavior. While he argues that it is unlikely that a genetic factor causes antisocial behavior, genetics are recognized as a possible moderating factor in the expression of antisocial behavior. More specifically, it is argued that when individuals with certain genetic predispositions are placed in stressful environments, genetics may play a role in determining the probability that those individuals will learn an antisocial, rather than socially acceptable, method of achieving their goals (Blair 2006). While the characteristics associated with psychopathy indicate inherent violent tendencies, cross-sectional studies of criminals confirm that a high percentage of psychopaths are involved in violent crimes and are more likely to reoffend. Most serious crime is committed by a disproportionate few of the criminal population. In fact, as evidenced by longitudinal studies, about 5 percent of criminally active subjects are responsible for over half the offenses recorded. To this end, psychopaths appear more prevalent in the criminal community. While psychopaths exist in the general public at an estimated 1 percent, this estimate jumps to a startling 15-25% in the incarcerated population.
